While researching Ravintsara for my last blog, I came across an herb with similar chemical composition called black cumin seed oil. As I proceeded to develop my understanding of black cumin seed oil, I began to realize just how incredible and life changing this plant truly is and wondering why I have gone my whole life without knowing about it. That is why I am writing this blog. If one person walks away from reading this with a little more knowledge and a tool for plant assisted self-healing, then it was worth the time to write this!
Black seed oil, AKA black cumin seed oil is a very ancient herb and has been used for a long time by several cultures. It was said to have been sent from a prophet as a cure all and has been passed down in folk medicine even since. There have recently been scientific studies discovering numerous benefits of this herb. Everything from anti-hypertensive properties to digestive stimulant, anti-microbial to immunomodulator, hepatoprotective to analgesic and everything in between.
There is an extremely complex chemotype found when analyzing black cumin seed oil. There is a long list of active terpenes and bio-chemicals in black seed oil. Here are a few of the most active ones in the plant. It shares some potent terpenes with other medicinal herbs. Thymoquinone, a potent terpene found in thyme, eucalyptus and Ravintsara has many healing properties including anti-viral and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Thymoquinone is the most active terpene and is responsible for a lot of the beneficial effects like anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Thymohydroquinone, 4-terpineol, and alpha-pinene are also very prominent in the chemotype and responsible for many healing modalities.
Black seed oil has been used to help with depression, chronic fatigue and even to help relieve opiate withdrawal. There has been much anecdotal information shared regarding its effectiveness against these symptoms but there have not been peer reviewed studies regarding the efficacy compared to placebo. I suggest that everyone do some research on their own regarding this plant. There is a ton of interesting information about it! It is quite a gift the world had bestowed onto itself in the forum of this plant medicine.
