Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is most noted for its role in supporting a healthy pregnancy and fetal development. Contrary to popular opinion, folic acid and folate are not the same, and the terms should not be used interchangeably. Folic acid refers to the oxidized, synthetic compound used in dietary supplements and food fortification, whereas folate refers to the various tetrahydrofolate (THF) derivatives naturally found in food.
