With fall well underway, and with winter right around the corner, let’s take a moment to discuss a crucial vitamin that many people are also deficient in – Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a unique vitamin that is actually naturally produced by the human body. The only downside is that this vitamin is produced by the skin, and your body requires adequate exposure to sunlight in order to produce it. For many people, it is simply not practical or even possible to get enough sunlight to make the amount of Vitamin D that your body requires. (All depending on where you live, the time of year, your skin type, how much skin is exposed to the sun, and other factors such as genetics.)

Therefore, supplementing with Vitamin D is often advised. Supplementing with Vitamin D can have many health benefits. It has been found to support a healthy immune system, healthy bones, and a healthy mood! It has been theorized that low Vitamin D is a potential factor in seasonal affective disorder. Vitamin D is my personal go-to supplement for seasonal depression. The recommended daily allowance for Vitamin D was recently raised to 600 IU for adults and 800 IU for older adults. However, some experts advise that many people’s needs may be higher. The best way to determine your needs is to ask you doctor for a blood test and continue to monitor your levels during your supplementation.

However, not all Vitamin D is created equal. There are a couple different forms of Vitamin D. The best, most absorbed form is Vitamin D3. Many Vitamin D3 supplements are made with lanolin, which is a byproduct from sheep’s wool. If you follow a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle diet you will want to make sure that the supplement that you choose is certified vegan. The vegan alternative is a Vitamin D3 sourced from lichen.
